Cluster buckling as a result of compression-bending balance in lipid bilayer.

چکیده
A new approach supporting the possibility of cluster buckling during the main phase transition in the lipid bilayer is presented. The elastic energy is calculated via harmonic approximation which yields the potential minimum in the case of buckling cluster, if critical cluster size is achieved. The significance of this event for interbilayer interaction in multilamellar vesicles is discussed.

Local Buckling of Plates Using The Spline Finite Strip Method
The spline finite strip method (S.F.S.M.) for buckling analysis of plates and plate assemblies subjected to longitudinal compression and bending, transverse compression as well as shear is described. The method allows for the boundary conditions. Local buckling coefficients of plates with different boundary conditions under compression, bending and shear are calculated. Convergence studies with...

متن کاملThe molecular mechanism of lipid monolayer collapse.
Lipid monolayers at an air-water interface can be compressed laterally and reach high surface density. Beyond a certain threshold, they become unstable and collapse. Lipid monolayer collapse plays an important role in the regulation of surface tension at the air-liquid interface in the lungs. Although the structures of lipid aggregates formed upon collapse can be characterized experimentally, t...
متن کاملRelaxation dynamics of two-component fluid bilayer membranes.
We theoretically investigate the relaxation dynamics of a nearly flat binary lipid bilayer membrane by taking into account the membrane tension, hydrodynamics of the surrounding fluid, inter-monolayer friction and mutual diffusion. Mutual diffusion is the collective irreversible process that leads to homogenization of the density difference between the two lipid species. We find that two relaxa...
متن کاملEvaporation-induced buckling and fission of microscale droplet interface bilayers.
Droplet interface bilayers (DIBs) are a robust platform for studying synthetic cellular membranes; however, to date no DIBs have been produced at cellular length scales. Here, we create microscale droplet interface bilayers (μDIBs) at the interface between aqueous femtoliter-volume droplets within an oil-filled microfluidic channel. The uniquely large area-to-volume ratio of the droplets result...
